Maxine Anne Charlie

<p class="p1">&nbsp;</p><p>Mrs Charlie was a proud Yawuru and Bunuba woman, Senior cultural ambassador and contemporary artist working in the studio for nearly two decades. She was instrumental in the development and vision of Nagula Jarndu Designs as an Indigenous arts studio for women.</p><p>She was a wonderful educator; teaching block printing skills, taking new artists under her wing and sharing with visitors and customers. She was a custodian of cultural knowledge and the transference of stories into textiles literature and art.</p><p>Mrs Charlie served as a director on the board of ANKA (Arnhem, Northern and Kimberley Artists) Aboriginal Corporation, for almost a decade. In 2017 she represented the Kimberley in calling for government action in a parliamentary inquiry into fake Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art being sold, becoming the &lsquo;Fake Art Harms Culture&rsquo; campaign.&nbsp;</p><p>In 2019 She received the Kullarri NAIDOC Art and Culture Award. In recognition of her ongoing work to keep art, Country and culture strong.</p>
